Lewis Black at Great Adventure #2
submitted by: JD Correll
My ex-wife(we were engaged at the time) and I went to see Lewis at Six Flags in New Jersey a few years ago. She had never seen a live comedian and was hesitant, but I am a huge fan of Lewis' so she agreed to go with me. I spent all day watching her go on rides and sweating my ass off just waiting for the time to head to the show. Finally, the time to head inside came. We managed to get great seats in the third row just to the right of center. Lewis came onstage to a standing ovation and started the show. As was expected, he was in peak performance. About ten minutes into the show, a roller coaster roared over the aluminum building, drowning out even Lewis' voice. He was obviously bothered by the interruption, but he managed to joke it off and continue on seamlessly. Fifteen minutes later, it happened again and again, Lewis played it off well. A couple moments after that it started thundering and raining. The 'good' people running the show turned the volume up so that Lewis could be heard over the rides and thunder and rain. What they failed to account for was the leak in the roof directly over Lewis' head. A few drops landed directly on Lew's head, then a couple hit the mic. This visibly irritated Lew and he made a comment about it, but moved on with the show, continuing to deliver an awesome performance. After all this headache, Lew lit a cigarette. At that time I didn't know he was a smoker, but as a proud smoker myself I was just as pissed as Lewis was when the stage manager informed him that he had to put it out. The entire audience booed the woman and Lewis complied, giving her a few...unfriendly remarks. Lew finished the show like a true entertainer. We gave him a standing ovation and Lew told us we were a great crowd but he would never return to that hellhole again.
Through all that, the thing that I will always remember about that show is during a rant about the presidential election of 2004, I yelled "Lewis for President!" The crowd cheer uproariously at which Lew said, "No, no, no....no." Then he looked directly at me and said, "And fuck you." This, I believe was the first time Lewis Black ever gave his reasons for why he could never be president. While I'm sure I had nothing to do with that hilarious rant, I like to think I provided the inspiration for it.
Lewis Black is, hands down, the greatest live entertainer ever. No matter how bad the venue, no matter the circumstances, no matter what the audience paid(the show was free with the cost of admission) Lewis always gives an amazing performance.
